The Maritime Institute of Technology & Graduate Studies (MITAGS) is pleased to announce the introduction of a new five-day course designed to provide mariners and pilots with the skills necessary to defend themselves and others in the event of an onboard security incident or even an attack while ashore in port. The Practical Security Applications (SEC-APPS) course will be offered in conjunction with Specialized Security Solutions, LLC, a firm specializing in maritime security.

The 35-hour program includes instruction in the defensive use of firearms as well as live range practice, de-escalation techniques, survivor mindset strategies, ways to respond to sudden violence, unarmed self-defense and security incident management. Participants will learn how to deal with an aggressive incident whether onboard a vessel or shore-side.

Commenting on the new offering, MITAGS’ Director of Training Eric Friend stated, “We are fortunate to have Sean Riley of Delaware Dragon Martial Arts, who is a Sixth Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and has earned high ranks in many systems, help conduct the course with a focus on unarmed self-defense. Sean is affiliated with Coach Greg Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts Curriculum and teaches his students the same techniques that has produced multiple UFC and World Champion and is taught to Law Enforcement and Special Forces throughout the world.  In addition, we are proud to be partnering with Specialized Security Solutions given their vast leadership and experience executing maritime operations worldwide.”

The course will be offered in March, June, August and October only. To learn more, visit the MITAGS website.
