Derecktor to Build a Second Hybrid Series Vessel

Published Jan 13, 2016 10:01 AM by The Maritime Executive

Derecktor Shipyards of Mamaroneck, New York is proud to announce their next project utilizing cutting edge hybrid technology, combined with the quality construction upon which Derecktor’s reputation is built.

Following on the highly successful application of hybrid electric propulsion on the 65' Research Catamaran Spirit of the Sound for The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut, The City University of New York (CUNY), in collaboration with the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay (SRI@JB) is contracting with Derecktor to build the second vessel in the Derecktor Hybrid Series.

The vessel will be built to USCG sub chapter T regulations and will be operated out of Jamaica Bay, New York. She will be used for research and educational purposes and will benefit from the silent operation of the hybrid system for highly sensitive research applications. Researchers will be focused on environmentally responsible operation with minimal impact on the local waters. This goal will be accomplished in part by limiting use of sea water for cooling equipment and instead use keel coolers to minimize the waste-water discharge from the vessel. This, in addition to the reduced emissions of the BAE HybriDrive® system, will create one of the most forward thinking and environmentally friendly vessels in operation today.
