Columbus Weekend Seminar on Long Distance Cruising

Published Sep 3, 2013 10:09 AM by The Maritime Executive

A two day seminar will be held on October 13 and 14 at the Maritime Institute Conference Centre (MITAGS) at Linthicum, MD.

Announcing this seminar, organiser Jimmy Cornell says,   ‘As far as I know, something of this scope has never been attempted in the US before.  We have put together a comprehensive syllabus, and have secured the participation of some highly qualified and experienced lecturers. We are also drawing on the excellent facilities available at MITAGS.’

Drawing on their experience from over one million miles of ocean sailing, a dozen circumnavigations and decades of cruising experience – this is what sailors attending this comprehensive seminar can expect from the speakers.  As well as contributions from Jimmy Cornell, speakers include meteorologist Lee Chesneau, medical expert and sailor Dr Laura Sudarsky, communications specialist Steven Bowden as well as experienced sailors and authors Beth Leonard and Evans Starzinger, and high latitude sailor Richard Hudson. The program covers all aspects of long distance cruising, from weather and passage planning to medical emergencies and communications. Also discussed will be subjects on sailing as a couple, including a special women-only session, the program being designed to appeal to both men and women looking for the best advice on long distance cruising.

The Maritime Institute’s excellent facilities will be used for a poolside liferaft demonstration and a view from the bridge simulation.

The seminar is part of the preparations for the Blue Planet Odyssey, the round the world rally commencing in 2014, which aims to raise awareness of climate change by sailing to parts of the world already suffering its effects, from South Pacific coral atolls to the Northwest Passage.

As well as Blue Planet Odyssey participants, any sailors interested in gaining a broader view of long distance cruising are invited to attend.  For more information and how to book a place visit: http://www.cornellsailing.com/events/seminars/long-distance-cruising/ or email [email protected].
