U.S. Warships Head to Libya Following Benghazi Attack

Published Sep 13, 2012 3:33 PM by The Maritime Executive

Recent reports state that the United States has sent out two (2) destroyers to Libya to boost security at its embassy in Tripoli, as well as a team of about fifty (50) Marines. This move comes after Washington's ambassador, Christopher Stevens, and three other Americans were killed in a terroristic attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on Tuesday, September 11th.

U.S. officials insist that the warships are strictly a precautionary measure, although no comments on the ships’ specific movements have been made yet. The first warship should be there within days. Spokespersons say the ships will carry missiles, but don't have a specific mission. Four other destroyers have already been in the Mediterranean Sea for some time.

The Marines are sending a Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team (FAST) to Libya. FASTs are under the authority of the US Navy's chief of operations, and were formed in 1987 to provide a fast response to security threats.

President Barack Obama quickly ordered increased security at US diplomatic posts around the world, and it remains unclear as to how the attackers managed to breach security.
