Shipwreck Uncovered by Hurricane Sandy

The strong winds of Hurricane Sandy uncovered the remains of a 90-year old ship that was buried under sand outside of Long Island, N.Y.

The ship’s identity has not yet been confirmed, but the remains are where the Bessie White ran aground, according to a public affairs specialist at Fire Island National Seashore.

Some of the ship’s remains have peeked through the sand dunes many times over the years after winter storms and storms smaller than Sandy, but until recently, no one was aware that a massive shipwreck was hiding there.

A U.S. Geological Survey researcher stated that the Barrier Islands, like Fire Island, naturally shift during storms, causing dunes to slowly inch toward the islands’ center.

Some are skeptical on if the ship’s remains will ever be positively identified.
