Navy Cargo Ship Drifts Powerless
The U.S. Navy operated cargo ship Cape Intrepid lost power and drifted for two miles before a tug intervened to take control of the vessel on Saturday.
The 685-foot vessel was undergoing sea trials in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, British Columbia, at the time of the incident. Details of the cause of the power loss have not yet been revealed.
The tug Jeffrey Foss has taken the vessel to Port Angeles in Washington for repairs.
Cape Intrepid is operated by Military Sealift Command, Tacoma. It left Tacoma on Friday for sea trials.
The vessel was originally laid down in 1975 as SS Arizona, a Type C7 ship intended for both commercial or military use.
