Two crewmembers are dead and another hospitalized after inhaling toxic fumes inside the Chinese-flagged M/T Jin Wang You 9’s forepeak tank on September 7. The 2,000-dwt vessel was docked at the Port of Shenzhen at the time of the incident. According to reports, one of the crewmen didn’t return after inspecting the tank, and two colleagues entered the tank to check up on him. Another crew member called the Shenzhen Maritime Rescue Center when none of his colleagues returned from their inspections.

The rescue team retrieved the three mariners, one of whom showed no signs of life while the other two were taken to a nearby hospital. One died in the hospital and the second is being treated for hypoxia.

The 2,000-dwt Jin Wang You 9 was transporting aviation oil from Huizhou to Shenzhen. The Shenzhen Maritime Bureau is investigating the incident.
