Holland America Cruise Ship Falls Short on CDC Assessment

Published Sep 26, 2012 11:19 AM by The Maritime Executive

Holland America Line’s ms Veendam failed a surprise inspection by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the 19th of August. CDC inspectors gave the ship a failing score of 77 out of 100. Earlier this year, the ship received a 93.

A health inspection is conducted twice a year and a score of 85 or below is deemed a failing score. The report cited the Veendam for over 100 violations including brown dripping liquid visible on dining ware, uncovered pastries, condiments being stored in close proximity to cockroach traps, and stained glassware. A number of appliances were also listed in need of repair.

The ship’s failing grade is uncommon in the global cruise industry. In fact, this is the first time the 16-year old ship has failed an inspection. According to the CDC website, a remedial report in response to the infractions has yet to be submitted.
