First of Kind Diamond Exploration Vessel Launched
On Saturday 9, the De Beers Marine Namibia's diamond sampling and exploration vessel Nujoma was launched from the slipway at Kleven Verft in Ulsteinvik, Norway.
The first of its kind and highly specialized vessel for deep water mineral exploration will include a wide range of tailor made equipment and features. It is based on the MT 6022 design from Marin Teknikk of Norway.
The 113 meter-long diesel-electric powered vessel will have a displacement of 12,000 tons and will accommodate a crew of 80. It has a helicopter deck suitable for Sikorsky S61s. As with other Debmarine Namibia vessels, the mining vessel Nujoma will be expected to remain on exploration operations for three years before returning to port for maintenance.
Upon delivery from the yard in June this year, the vessel will sail to South Africa for final installation of key equipment.
Debmarine Namibia is a joint venture marine diamond prospecting and mining company, owned equally by De Beers and the government of the Republic of Namibia. Its other vessels are: Debmar Atlantic, Debmar Pacific, Gariep, Grand Banks and Mafuta.
