Colombo Ranked Highest Growth Port by Alphaliner

Industry analyst Alphaliner has ranked the Port of Colombo in Sri Lanka as the world’s No.1 container growth port among the top 30 container ports for the first half of 2018. 

This first for the port follows a 15.6 percent growth in container handling for the first half of 2018, compared to the same period last year, according to Alphaliner Monthly 2018. According to Alphaliner, Singapore at No.2 experienced 11.6 percent growth, Guangzhou at No.3 experienced 8.6 percent growth, Antwerp at No.4 experienced 8.3 percent growth and Xiamen at No.5 experienced 7.6 percent growth.
 
Recently the three terminal operators at the Port of Colombo; the Jaya Container Terminal under SLPA, the South Asia Gateway Terminal and the Colombo International Container Terminal signed an Memorandum of Understanding to operate collectively to promote the Port of Colombo, a move expected to minimize turnaround time for container vessels. 

The Port of Colombo recorded 6.2 million container operations in 2017. The Drewry Port Connectivity Index ranked the Port of Colombo as the 13th best Connectivity Port in the world for the fourth quarter 2017, up by 5 places from its previous rank. According to the ranking, the Port of Colombo is also the top best connectivity port in South Asia.

For its dedicated performance to up lift the position of the Port of Colombo in the world maritime map, Sri Lanka Ports Authority was awarded the Ports Authority of the Year Award by the Global Ports Forum in 2018.
