An explosion during a bunkering operation in Indonesia has left one person dead and two others with extensive burns.

According to local media, the fire started when the Hyn 16, with a cargo of sand, was being refueled by the bunker vessel Hyn 19. As the two ships were being connected by the fuel hose the oil caught fire leading to an explosion on board Hyn 19.

The fire then spread to Hyn 16, and Jakarta’s water police deployed eight vessels to extinguish the blaze.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in Jakarta Bay about 1.5 miles from Pantai Mutiara in Penjaringan, North Jakarta.

The man who died has been identified as Ruslan, 28, from East Java. The crew of the Hyn 16 was able to escape unharmed.

Investigations are underway.
