Aberdeen Harbor has appointed two new members to its Board. George Massie and Fred Bowden began their tenure on January 1, 2011 and will serve for an initial period of three years.

A Chartered Architect, Chartered Town Planner and development consultant, George Massie has worked both in private practice and local government. Prior to returning to private practice he held a number of senior positions in the Town Planning department of Aberdeen City Council. With extensive knowledge of large-scale, complex development projects he has experience in master planning and is a recognised expert witness in the fields of town planning, conservation and historic buildings, having appeared at many Public Inquiries.

Mr. Massie is also an active member of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, Institute of Directors and is Life member and former committee member of the North East Scotland Preservation Trust.

Fred Bowden is the chairman of Fife-based Tullis Russell Group, where he was chief executive for two years before being appointed to the Board. Mr Bowden was previously a non-executive chairman of Scottish Enterprise Fife, where he was involved in the development of Fife Energy Park. He is also a Trustee of the Russell Trust and non-executive director of leading childcare company, Childbase.

Commenting on the appointments, Colin Parker chief executive of Aberdeen Harbor, said: “We are delighted to welcome both George and Fred to the Board and I believe their wealth of experience will be valuable to ensure the port maintains its competitive position.

“Collectively, the Board provides a robust governance of the harbor, ensuring that, as a Trust port, all profits are reinvested to develop and maintain the harbour’s facilities to the highest standards. As we reach 50 years of the Board, Aberdeen Harbor continues to be an integral part of the north-east’s economy and these are exciting times for us as we continue to grow and further implement our £65million development strategy.”

Aberdeen Harbor handles around five million tonnes of cargo, valued at £1.5 billion, and growing levels of shipping for a wide range of industries. With more than £200 million invested by the Board in the last 30 years, the port is one of the most modern in Europe.
