JOB TITLE: Senior Instructor - Nautical Science COMPANY: Global Maritime and Transportation School (GMATS) LOCATION: Kings Point, New York, USA INDUSTRY: Education STARTING SALARY RANGE: $72,000 to $94,802 POINT OF CONTACT: Kelly Curtin, Division Manager, Nautical Science / [email protected] / (516) 726-6131 JOB SUMMARY: Full-time position is primarily responsible for providing instructional delivery and student assessment in the nautical sciences in classroom, laboratory, shipboard, and advanced simulation technology environments. These responsibilities will also include design, development, and maintenance of nautical science curriculum; management of instructor evaluation program; and maintaining highest standards of technical expertise in nautical science instruction and student assessment. Superb benefits and workplace setting at waterfront campus aboard the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Some travel may be required to include limited underway time. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Current USCG Master, Any Gross Tons, Oceans license with current STCW-95 certificate. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Bachelor's Degree in Marine Transportation, Nautical Science, or related field or more than 5 years equivalent demonstrated work experience. Advanced degree(s) in maritime, business and/or education related field and train the trainer certification desired. EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 10 years seagoing experience with at least 2 years service as Master aboard ocean going vessels. Additional criteria desired: instructor and/or assessor experience; work experience in the management and administration of competency-based seafarer training programs under a quality standards system; 15+ years seagoing experience with more than 5 years service as Master; service as Master of multiple vessel types; U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer qualification; experience as professional harbor pilot; recent (i.e., within the last 5 years) underway experience; and towing endorsement/experience. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: •Serve as an expert-level instructor and assessor based on USCG, STCW, GMATS, and customer requirements. •Serve as an expert-level simulator instructor/operator and assessor based on USCG, STCW, GMATS, and customer requirements. •Maintain the highest levels of technical expertise in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and other national and international standards, laws, and regulations relating to the training, competency-based assessment, and certification of seafarers. •Maintain the highest levels of technical expertise in the nautical sciences, adult learning methodology, competency-based student assessment, and maritime training/education best practices. •Manage program for the evaluation of all Nautical Science faculty's performance and effectiveness; make reports and recommendations to the Division Manager, Nautical Science. •Design, development, and maintenance of course content and assessment tools in the nautical sciences for delivery via various instructional methods (e.g., classroom, laboratory, shipboard, web- and computer-based, distance learning, etc.).
