Boston Harbor Pilot Association LLC Moving Offices
The home of the Boston Pilots Association was scheduled for demolition this week. And that means just one more maritime related business will disappear from the East Boston waterfront in the face of the relentless encroachment of non-traditional redevelopment of one of the nation’s oldest ports. In this case, the move is temporary and Captain Gregg Farmer, the President of the Boston Pilots, told MarEx, “This is a temporary move for us. Our new location works fine until the project at Pier one is completed.” Here and across the country, other maritime related businesses are not so lucky.
The Boston Pilots Association has existed for about one hundred years and has been headquartered in East Boston since the 1970’s. The building where they called home for so long will now be razed and luxury condos, restaurants, and stores will take its place. In that new building, space is being reserved for the pilots, as well.
Although, as Farmer says, their move is temporary, the new project highlights the encroachment of non-traditional businesses and residential housing into the waterfront area, both here and in other places across the US eastern seaboard. As one of the oldest, continuously operating business in Massachusetts, the Boston pilots will eventually get to return to a location which is centrally located for easy access of their pilot boats. But before this can happen, another little piece of Boston’s historical waterfront will disappear and take the form of trendy lofts and stylish boutiques.
The Boston Pilots announced this week that their new, temporary address would be as follows:
Boston Harbor Pilot Association LLC
256 Marginal St. / Building 11
