Jamian Submits Resignation From MARAD

The acting Maritime Administrator John E. Jamian will leave his post, effective May 1, to head a Great Lakes maritime trade association in Detroit. MARAD Agency spokespersons made no announcement when Jamian submitted his resignation on March 20. He has been serving as acting administrator since the departure of William G. Schubert in February 2005.

President Bush nominated DP World executive David Sanborn to be Marad administrator in January, but the White House withdrew Sanborn's name after his nomination got caught in the political firestorm created by DP World's acquisition of P&O's U.S. marine terminals. Jamian, the No. 2 Marad executive, reportedly withdrew his name from consideration for the top job. Julie A. Nelson, Marad general counsel, will act as head of the agency after Jamian's departure. Jamian was not immediately available for comment.
