Iran to Decide on Seized British Boats

Published Aug 10, 2004 12:01 AM by The Maritime Executive

Iran's Revolutionary Guards will decide in the coming days whether to release the three patrol boats and equipment seized from an eight-man naval unit. General Massoud Jazayeri said that the boats were seized only after they entered Iran's waters. However, members of the British naval unit said that they were "forcibly escorted" over the maritime border by Iranian troops. Additionally, British officials are protesting the treatment of the six Royal Marines and two sailors, saying that they were subjected to an apparent mock execution. Furthermore, Britain is unable to prove its claims that the boats were forcibly escorted, unless it recovers sophisticated GPS navigational equipment on the boats.
