U.S. Maritime Fatalities on the Rise

-Baltimore, Maryland: March 6, 2004- A water taxi carrying 25 passengers overturns in high winds in Baltimore?s Inner Harbor, killing one person. Three others are missing and presumed dead.

-Norfolk, Virginia: February 28, 2004- Bow Mariner tanker transporting ethanol explodes off Virginia coast, killing 21 crew members.

-New Orleans, Louisiana: February 21, 2004-The Lee III, an offshore supply boat collides with a container ship in the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River, killing all 5 crew members.

-Albany, New York: December 9, 2003-A Dutch cargo ship overturned in the Hudson River, while being loaded with a turbine. Three sailors died.

-Staten Island, New York: October 15, 2003- the ferry, ?Andrew J. Barberi,? slams into a pier while docking, killing 10 and injuring more than 60.

-Oregon Coast: June 14, 2003- Charter fishing boat, ?Taki-Tooo? capsized off the Oregon coast killing 11 people.

-Elk River, Maryland: February 25, 2002- Tugboat ?Swift? collides with cargo ship on Elk River. Four crew members died.

-Honolulu, Hawaii: February 9, 2001- Submarine, USS Greenville, surfaces and sinks a Japanese fisheries training boat carrying students, teachers, and crew members, killing 9.

-Houston, Texas: December 19, 2000- A tugboat and dredging boat collide in the Houston Ship Channel, killing a deckhand.

-Arkansas: May 1, 1999- A tourist boat sinks in an Arkansas lake, killing 13 passengers.
