[Updated] Search for Virginia Tech Student Called Off

A Virginia Tech student who was reported to have fallen off the Carnival Glory cruise ship in the early morning hours on Sunday has been presumed dead. Video footage from the cruise line shows the 21-year-old falling off the Glory five miles southwest of Abaco Island in the Bahamas.

The U.S. Coast Guard has conducted search and rescue operations and another ship, the Carnival Ecstasy, reportedly joined the search of the area until Monday evening.

The Coast Guard reportedly launched a Jayhawk helicopter from the Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater and a rescue plane from the Coast Guard Air Station Miami to participate in the search.

The search was suspended on Tuesday evening after canvassing an area of approximately 6,500 nautical square miles with two aircrafts and a ship. 

Virginia Tech released the identity of the student as Cameron Smook of Glen Allen, Virginia. Smook was a senior at Virginia Tech majoring in mining and minerals engineering.
