Jotun Launches New Offshore Industry Coatings at OTC

Jotun, a leading manufacturer and supplier of high performance coatings, is launching two revolutionary new coatings specifically developed for the offshore industry.
Barrier Plus, is a new two-component zinc-rich epoxy primer based on revolutionary technology, providing optimal cathodic corrosion protection of steel substrates for offshore structures in atmospheric conditions. Another new product, Penguard Pro, can be applied for use in both atmospheric and in submerged conditions, in a single coating, as a primer or mid-coat solution.
“Jotun believes that the launch of Barrier Plus and Penguard Pro are a major advance in offshore coating technologies for steel structures and provide a solid foundation for longer lasting coatings systems in the harshest of environments. These coatings offer significant and enduring financial and operational benefits to owners of offshore assets.”, says Tom Kristiansen, global product manager anticorrosives.
Jotun has developed Barrier Plus and Penguard Pro over a number of years and, at launch, both products have been fully tested and approved to industry-recognized ISO 20340 and NORSOK M501 standards. These standards provide owners with the utmost confidence in the quality of these Jotun coating systems.
Jotun chemists have been working on new epoxy binder combinations and tailored in-house curing agent technologies, and have discovered a solution that combines new and previous in-organic zinc primers properties. Barrier Plus zinc coating protects well and is easy to apply to superstructures above the waterline. By investing in a high quality coating
at the building stage, Barrier Plus will ensure longer intervals between maintenance.
Penguard Pro offers a wide dry film thickness range between 100 and 500 microns – unique in the industry. Used as a mid-coat or primer both above and below the water, the thickness range means the number of coats can be reduced. It can also be applied in temperatures from as low as -5°C to as high as +40°C making it a true all-season application-friendly product.
Jotun has also announced that Marathon, a well known glass flake reinforced epoxy coating, has been approved to the NORSOK M501 Edition 6 standard for submerged steel structures to withstand temperatures up to 150°C. Cathodic protection is used in combination with paint systems, and following this approval, Marathon becomes a universal, two-layer subsea product, making it easy for the yard and paint contractor to choose the most efficient corrosion protection.
