VIDEO: Historic Shipwreck Found in Lake Michigan Revealed

Published Nov 29, 2011 11:40 AM by The Maritime Executive

Divers have revealed a discovered shipwreck about five miles offshore between Saint Joseph and New Buffalo in Lake Michigan at the Michigan Maritime Museum. The boat is an 80-foot schooner that is believed to have been built in the early 1800s. It is currently buried to the deck in sand about 70 feet below the lake’s surface.

Since the initial discovery back in October, an experienced team of divers have gone down multiple times. The anchor alone dates back to 1890 and around it is much evidence that the ship is still intact for the most part. The team feels confident in having found enough evidence to put a sketch together, but still need more information.

There is still no confirmation as to what wreck it is. It is believed that the ship sank around the 1890s, but since so much of the vessel remains under the sand, divers cannot confirm the ship’s identity or who was on it.

Dozens of historic ships are recorded lost near the St. Joseph Harbor and still haven’t been found. Work is still ongoing to figure out this mystery.
