Greek ship operator Chandris has plead guilty to violations of the Act to Prevent Pollution from ships. Chandris has been ordered to pay $1 million for dumping oily waste into the Texas Gulf Coast.

Chandris will pay a $800,000 fine and a $200,000 community service payment to the National Marine Sanctuary. Chandris has also been placed on a three-year probation.

In December 2014, the chief engineer of the Chandris-operated M/T Sestrea failed to document that the ship had dumped oily waste directly into the sea. The waste should have been disposed through a separator aboard the vessel or burned in the ship’s incinerator.

The Sestra is a 81,502 ton vessel.

Chandris, which is based in Piraeus, manages and operates of tankers and bulk carriers. The vessels are owned by individual companies and registered under the Greek flag. Chandris has 23 ships under its management.
