Seven people were injured around 3am on Sunday morning when a cargo ship rammed their boat 55 nautical miles off Kochi, India.

The fishermen had anchored the boat, Harshitha, at sea and were rod fishing when their vessel was hit and then dragged by the cargo ship, possibly a container ship, which left the scene without changing speed.

The crew of a nearby fishing boat, Chinnu, were able to rescue the fishermen before their boat capsized. All have been taken to hospital, three with serious injuries.

The fishermen were unable to identify the ship that rammed their boat.

The Indian Coast Guard has launched an investigation.
