One crew member has died and another two are seriously injured after falling from the chemical tanker MTM Westport

The Bremen Rescue arm of the German Society for Sea Rescue Service (GMRS) coordinated the rescue of the crewmen after being alerted to a man overboard emergency on Friday, southeast of Helgoland in Germany.

The vessel was at anchor at the time of the accident, which is thought to be the result of a lifeboat mishap.

A search and rescue helicopter from the German Navy assisted in the rescue along with other vessels. One of the crewmen was unable to be resuscitated; the other two have been flown to a local hospital for treatment.

An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the accident.
