Malaysian Navy Ship Partially Sinks During Refit

A Royal Malaysian Navy ship, docked at the Bousted Naval Shipyard (BNS) for refit work, partially sank when water flooded the lower part of the vessel. No injuries have been reported.

The KD Perantau suffered flooding on Tuesday night, reportedly during an attempt to remove its generator set.

According to a statement issued by the Royal Malaysian Navy, the hydrography vessel arrived at the shipyard on November 10, and was to be handed back to the Navy on August 10, 2015. The official statement said that “almost all movable equipment such pumps, motors and survey apparatus had already been removed from the ship in preparation for the refit work.”

An investigation board will be set up to determine the cause of the flooding. Both the Navy and BNS are salvaging the ship.

KD Perantau was designed and equipped for conducting hydrographic surveys, along with meteorological and oceanographic observation. She was commissioned on Oct 12, 1998.
