Seventh Ship Has Left the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet

The General John Pope (AP-110) departed the Suisan Bay Reserve Fleet on Wednesday, May 5, 2010.
The WWII-Era Ship, a P2 “General” class type troop ship, was built in 1943 by the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company of Kearny, New Jersey for the United States Maritime Commission. The vessel was operated by the United States Navy and after the war was transferred to the Army and redesignated USAT General John Pope. She later served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars as a civilian-manned Military Sea Transportation Service vessel, as USNS General John Pope (T-AP-110) until entering the National Defense Reserve Fleet in Suisun Bay, California in 1970.
The vessel will have marine growth and loose exterior paint removed on a drydock at a ship repair facility in San Francisco prior to departure for Texas where it will be recycled.
