Donjon Marine Co., Inc. Removes Two Weather Towers From Rutgers University Marine Field Station

Hillside, NJ -- Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., a provider of multi-faceted marine services including marine salvage, heavy lift, dredging and related emergency response services, was contracted by Rutgers University for the demolition and removal of two weather towers from the Marine Field Station located in Little Egg Inlet in Tuckerton, New Jersey. The biggest tower was 217 feet tall, weighed 60 tons and was in danger of falling due to erosion by the seawater at the base of the tower. The second, smaller tower, 65 feet in length, was in danger of falling due to corrosion.

This job was unique because the larger tower was located in protected marshland. Removal came by utilization of a water rig and not the traditional land-based crane removal process in order not to impact the protected land. Donjon is one of the few contractors on the East Coast with marine assets capable of reaching similar heights, distances and weights as required for this job.

The job was completed in just one day, on November 14, 2007, with the use of the 400-ton capacity fully revolving barge crane Columbia-New York and two of Donjon’s tugs.
