MITAGS Announces Start of Two Training Programs
• Workboat Mate Program
MITAGS is accepting applications into the second Workboat Mate Program scheduled to start in October, 2007. This Program offers a “fast track” to a career at sea. Motivated individuals will go through a comprehensive two-year agenda, and acquire either a Mate 500 or Mate 1600 Ton License that is endorsed for towing vessels (depending on sea service). Individuals will also receive STCW and Able-Bodied Seaman certification.
The shore-side portion of the program is comprised of at least twenty-five weeks of classroom and simulation training, interspersed with fifty-two weeks of onboard training. Each academic phase of the program is followed by an onboard training phase that reinforces knowledge and skills with real world lessons. Local towing companies and other vessel operators are an integral part of the onboard training phase.
