Salmon Well Boat Sails Electric
The new MS SEIHAV has now gone on chart with the Norwegian salmon farming company Lerøy Seafood Group. 4000 cubic meters of live salmon can be carried in the tanks over long distances. The cargo is highly valuable, and vulnerable. A reliable and environmentally sustainable propulsion arrangement has been chosen for this ship which is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
STADT AS – the leading Norwegian company in electric propulsion, was granted the contract by the shipyard Fitjar Mekaniske Verkstad.
The diesel-electric system in this ship is highly reliable, and based upon the STADT NO-Loss AC drives of 3000 kW, controlling two independent electric motors in to a single screw CPP propeller arrangement via the common gearbox.
The electric drives has triple redundancy, and fulfills the latest regulations from DNV-GL for ships with single screw electric propulsion. All power for the entire ship comes from 3 equal CAT C280-6 diesel generator sets, each 1825 kW, 900 rpm, 690 V 60 Hz. The ship can operate with 1, 2 or 3 of these generator sets engaged. All the electric power that is generated by the CATs are fed in to the STADT main switchboard and PMS system, that can distribute the power out to any consumers on the ship , including the 3 MW electric propulsion. A complete breakdown on two out of tree generator sets, will not jeopardize the safe operation of the ship. Besides the powerful main propellers and two tunnel thrusters 700 kW each, this ship has a lot of electrically operated pumps and processing equipment that circulates the seawater where the salmon is kept.
STADT AS celebrated its 30th anniversary as a company last December, and at the same time they moved in to their brand new maritime center of 3600 square meters, located on the west coast of Norway. The company has delivered their patented and awarded AC drive technology to yards and ships of many verities all over the world.
