Trial operations have commenced at the world's biggest automated container terminal - the Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port Phase 4.

Once it enters full operation, the fourth phase of the Yangshan Port will initially be able to handle four million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

The port occupies 2.23 million square meters (24 million square feet), with two 70,000 dwt berths and five 50,000 dwt berths.

Initially, 50 driverless automatic guided vehicles (AGVs), 10 ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and 40 rail-mounted gantry cranes will be handling cargo. This is planned to increase to 130 AGVs, 26 overhead cranes and 120 rail-mounted gantry cranes.
