[Updated] One Dead, Two Injured on Drill Rig
One person has died and two were injured on the semi-submersible drilling rig COSL Innovator when a heavy wave hit the rig.
COSL Innovator is under contract to Statoil on the Troll field in the North Sea, west of Bergen, Norway. The rig had been taken off the well due to heavy weather when the incident occurred. The wave also caused damage to the rig's accommodation module.
Statoil and COSL mobilized their emergency response organizations after being notified of the incident at 5 pm local time on December 30.
The injured people have been flown to land by a Sea King helicopter from the Norwegian Joint Rescue Coordination Centre as well as one of Statoil’s own SAR helicopters.
Statoil is assisting COSL with evacuation of the rig down to the safety crew. Evacuees are being flown ashore.
