Ferry Driver Pulls Off Incredible Rescue

Quick thinking from a Western Australian ferry driver saved the life of an elderly man and his dog last week after the accidentally drove his car in to the water while trying to board the ferry.

It is believed the 77-year-old man accidentally hit the accelerator of his car causing it to crash through the safety railing and into the river.

The car began to sink and was almost submerged when ferry driver Robin Evernden threw a life ring to him and dived into the water. Unable to get the man out, he and another man punctured the car roof with the ferry ramps. This held the car up with enough of an air pocket at the back for the man to breathe.

Evernden then smashed the side window and got the man out. Once he was safely back on the ferry, Evernden smashed the rear window of the car to save the dog.

The elderly man remained calm throughout the rescue but was very concerned for his dog.

Evernden credited extensive safety training for his ability to conduct the rescue and remain calm.
