Maritime Security Training Certification Achieved at MITAGS and PMI

Published Jun 23, 2005 12:01 AM by The Maritime Executive

Glen Paine, Executive Director of the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) and the Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI), announced that Det Norske Veritas in New York has certified their presentation of the "Vessel, Company, and Facility Officer" security program on behalf of the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Center and Maritime Administration (MARAD).

"Prior to the publication of the International Maritime Organization course models, MITAGS and PMI were presenting Ship, Company, and Facility Security Officer training," said Glen Paine. "This certification by important governmental authorities truly validates the comprehensive approach that has been undertaken by MITAGS and PMI in the maritime security training arena."

MITAGS and PMI's 21-hour course meets and exceeds the requirements of the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, SOLAS, the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), relevant U.S. Coast Guard regulations, and the following IMO model courses:

- Ship Security Officer (3.19)
- Company Security Officer (3.20)
- Port Facility Security Officer (3.21)

The MITAGS campus in Linthicum, Maryland and the PMI campus in Seattle, Washington will be the primary training sites for the program, however, the structure of the training provides customers with the opportunity for offsite classes at locations that have suitable classrooms.
