Maritime Cook Islands adds Specialized Tonnage

Published Nov 25, 2014 4:43 PM by The Maritime Executive

Maritime Cook Islands (MCI), one of world’s the leading yacht registries, has just entered two types of highly specialized, high value vessels onto the flag from two established yacht owners, namely Emerald Sea Surveys and Echo Yachts.

Emerald Sea Surveys is the proud owner of R.V. Whale Song – a specially built research vessel for monitoring and tracking the behavior of whales and Echo Yachts is currently building one of the world’s largest super yachts.

The Maritime Cook Islands was selected as the flag of choice by both owners due to its commitment to the highest international safety standards and consistent quality control over vessels and crew.

R.V. Whale Song, currently chartered by the Centre for Whale Research, is a 28m steel hull, ice rated research vessel built to conduct specialized whale research around the world. The research vessel is capable of collecting clear recordings and has allowed the center’s scientists to record whale songs and vocals whilst sailing with its sound-silenced engines. This is one of the few vessels in the world which can operate in silent conditions other than navy submarines.

The other notable new additions to the flag are two vessels being built by Echo Yachts, including one of the world’s largest super yachts. The 84-metre aluminum multi-hull yacht is the largest tri-hulled super-yacht ever built and is being built alongside a 46-metre fiberglass catamaran, which is designed as a super-sized, super luxury support vessel.

Both vessels will incorporate the latest technology with unique designs customized to fit the owners’ needs. The support vessel is expected to launch in late 2015 to complement the construction of the 84-metre super yacht which will take three years from start to finish.

Glenn Armstrong, managing dDirector of MCI commented: “We are delighted and grateful for the trust from both yacht owners and this marks another major milestone for our expanding ship registry. Our yacht registry continues to grow as we strive to constantly improve ourselves to uphold the highest quality and safety standards in shipping.”
