EAST TIMOR AND AUSTRALIA DISCUSS MARITIME BOARDERS

Published Mar 9, 2005 12:01 AM by The Maritime Executive

East Timor has always claimed Australia has bullied its smaller neighbor over the maritime boundaries of the Timor Sea. It is estimated that the sea has $41 million in oil and gas reserves. Negotiations ended last year, after East Timor claimed that Australia issued take-it-or leave-it ultimatums.

East Timor is looking for a sharing of revenues from oil and gas activities. The countries are meeting in the Australian capital of Canberra this week.
