An FBI diving team, along with help from the US Coast Guard and a Canadian warship, has recovered a large amount of cocaine from a submarine wreck site. Canadian navy officials can confirm this and say the vessel was scuttled self-propelled semi-submersible.

Over 6,700 kilograms of cocaine were found in the submarine that was located in the Caribbean basin. The drug cargo was recovered by the FBI laboratory’s technical dive team, USCG Cutter Cypress and Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship St John’s.

Officials declined comments regarding when the cocaine was found, but state that the semi-sub was scuttled off the Honduran coast by traffickers being pursued by government forces. Three suspects in this case were apprehended in late November, but the vessel had remained 900m underwater, out of authorities’ hands.

The Canadian Navy states that the drugs were intended to be sold in North America and had an estimated worth of about $180 million.
