Seats Become Unlikely Obstacle in Lamma Ferry Tragedy

Published Dec 12, 2012 4:42 PM by The Maritime Executive

The commission that is probing the Lamma ferry tragedy in Hong Kong is now questioning why deck seats on the Lamma IV broke away from their floor screws, obstructing passengers’ escape.

Counsel for the commission noted that a number of seats on the ship broke free when the ship collided with the ferry Sea Smooth. Surviving passengers will testify on what difficulties the loose seats caused during their escape from the fatal collision. Overall, about 37 witnesses are expected to present evidence.

According to the South China Morning Post, photos shown during the hearing revealed screw holes on the floor of the upper deck of Lamma IV, where the seats were originally attached. Some loose screws could be seen on a seat that was not completely disconnected.

The commission is scheduled to report on the cause of the disaster within six months. They will also recommend improvements to maritime safety in Hong Kong.

The Lamma ferry disaster was Hong Kong’s worst maritime accident in 40 years, killing 39 people in October.
