MITAGS-PMI Develops New Management, Communication & Leadership Course for Horizon Lines
Glen Paine, Executive Director of the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS), announced a new 5-day course designed for senior ships officers and company management.
“The course was developed for Horizon Lines, but the first four days are applicable to all mariners sailing at the management or department levels,” said Paine. “Effective ship management requires training in both technical and personnel skills. The new Management, Communication, and Leadership Course focus on the soft skills necessary for today modern shipboard operations.”

• Generational Differences
• Communications
• Verbal & Written Communications
• Conducting Meetings
• Interpersonal Conduct
• Safety Management Culture
• Incident Investigation
• Disciplinary Methods
• Time Management
A pilot course was held at MITAGS on July 12th through 16th. It was attended by deck / engineering officers, and senior management from Horizon Lines. Also in attendance for segments of the class were officials from the International Organization of Masters, Mates, and Pilots, and representatives from Military Sealift Command and Waterman.
