Ships Collide off Southern Singapore

Published Jan 5, 2012 9:34 AM by The Maritime Executive

A container ship and a very large crude carrier (VLCC) collided Wednesday night off the southern coast of Singapore.

The Maritime Port Authority says that Singapore-flagged, KOTA TENAGA, and  Malta-flagged, SEEB,  collided near Pulau Sebarok, near Sentosa Island. Officials say 5 metric tons of bunker fuel has leaked since the collision.

More than a dozen response vessels were on hand to contain and clean the oil spill using boom and biodegradable oil spill dispersants. KOTA TENAGA was moved to the Raffles Reserved Anchorage. Additional boom was laid around the ship as a precaution.

No injuries have been reported. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore is monitoring the cleanup and investigating the cause of the collision.

The KOTA TENAGA, a container ship, was built in 2002 and is owned by Pacific Eagle Lines Ltd. and managed by Pacific International Lines – both based in Singapore. The SEEB, a VLCC, was built in 2011. It is operated by International Tanker Management Holding Ltd. based in the United Arab Emirates.
