• Indonesia: At Least 25 Dead in Two Indonesian Ferry Accidents
Nov 22, 2009 — On Sunday there were two ferry accidents in Indonesia. In the first incident the Dumai Express 10 sank near Karimun island killing at least 25 people. However, more than 240 were rescued from the overloaded vessel. In the second accident, the Dumai Express 15 with 278 people on board, ran aground, but there were no fatalities. Both accidents are described as occurring in rough seas.

• Somalia: U.S. Transport Secretary Offers Anti-Pirate Reminder
Nov 20, 2009 — U.S. Transportation Department a statement on Thursday in which DOT Secretary Ray LaHood "reminded mariners about the importance of taking necessary precautions and implementing best practices in the wake of recent attacks on the M/V Harriett andMaersk Alabama off the coast of Somalia."

• United Kingdom: IMO Governing Body to Meet Next Week
Nov 19, 2009 — The 26th Assembly of the UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet from November 23 to December 4 in London at IMO HQ. The Assembly, which is the IMO's governing body, normally meets once every two years. It is responsible for approving the work program, voting the budget and determining the financial arrangements of the Organization. It also elects the 40-Member Council.

• Nauru: Seven Men Rescued After 2 Months at Sea
Nov 18, 2009 — This past weekend the crew of U.S. fishing vessel Ocean Encounter rescued seven Papua New Guinean men who claimed they were adrift at sea in their vessel since September 14. While 2 of those plucked from the sea died after the rescue, the remaining five survivors claim an eighth person, a 17-year-old, was washed overboard and lost at sea last week.
