Lloyd's Register Offers Clean Shipping Index

Published Jan 3, 2011 1:21 PM by The Maritime Executive

Lloyd's Register (LR) is now offering a clean shipping index verification service. The index will demonstrate ship owner and operator successes in reducing the environmental impact of their activities beyond the requirements of classification or rules and regulations.

The service claims to be cost effective and can be delivered with little interruption to ship operations. The index was developed and approved by the Clean Shipping Project. It takes into account the significant environmental impacts of shipping, such as: emissions, use of chemicals, effects of antifouling and can be used to rank ships or companies in a database for users.

The verification process was developed by LR Marine and Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance, and requires an audit of the ship to minimize cost and inconvenience.
