Deal Inked for New Terminal at Port of Los Angeles
Los Angeles mayor, Antonia Villaraigosa, announced approval for California United Terminals to build a new container terminal at the Port of Los Angeles with the help of its parent company, Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. Ltd.
California United Terminals is planning to build the new 200-acre automated container terminal at Pier 500 on a man-made peninsula on the southeast edge of Pier 400. The terminal will be equipped with an “on-dock” rail system that will allow trains to be loaded within Pier 500.

Owner of the California terminal operator from Japan’s Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. signed the MOU during an 11-day visit to the city to negotiate deals with Mayor Villaraigosa, Hyundai officials and an Asian trade delegation.
The Los Angeles Business Journal said the positioning is strategically assigned to help enhance the flow of goods to and from South Korea. Eight of the Port of Los Angeles’ top ten trading partners are Asian countries, and account for more than $250 billion in trade.
Although the MOU was signed by both parties, Phillip Sanfield, a spokesman for the port, reported that before any construction can commence at Pier 500, the plans would have to undergo stringent environmental reviews.
