Coast Guard Explores Fuel Delivery Options in Nome, Alaska

The Coast Guard is continuing to work with the city of Nome to explore options to find a solution to their fuel crisis.

The Coast Guard was notified that the last shipment of fuel expected to arrive in Nome was cancelled because of last month's severe winter storm. The ice sheet has created significant challenges for the city to receive their fuel and options are being explored to get the crucial shipment into Nome.

The Coast Guard Cutter Healy, a 420-foot ice breaker, is currently conducting scientific missions in the area and may be able to assist. Healy is scheduled to complete their currently assigned missions in the Arctic within the next few weeks before returning to its homeport in Seattle.

"We are going to work closely with the city, state and our industry partners to explore all options to help the people of Nome," said Rear Adm. Thomas P. Ostebo, commander, Coast Guard District 17. "We understand how critical the fuel is to ensuring they can sustain their way of life through the winter."
