Cargo Ship Runs Aground, Rescue Delayed by Weather
The salvage of a grounded cargo ship has been delayed due to severe weather. The vessel ran aground on Saturday off the coast of Northumberland.
The M/V DANIO is stuck on rocks on the Farne Islands about 3 miles (5km) from the mainland, and has about 27 tons of diesel fuel and 1,500 tons of timber onboard.
The UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said it was aware of the potential impact on the island. It was hoped an attempt to free the ship, which was heading from Scotland to Belgium, could have been made today, but an MCA spokesman said weather conditions are getting increasingly worse.
The ship’s master and crew of six are still aboard the stranded vessel. Seahouses Lifeboat Station received a distress call from the DANIO's crew at about 04:30 GMT on Saturday, according to BBC News.
There had been concerns of environmental damage caused by oil spillages, but no leaks have been reported.
