Maritime Incidents:
A tanker runs around -- Captain and crew member drown -- Tanker Explodes.
• Tanker Runs Aground:
An oil tanker ran aground off the southern county of Pingtung, Taiwan, the government environmental agency said. Initial reports say that the grounding poses no threat of an oil spill.
The Colombo Queen, a 497-ton tanker registered in the Union of Comoros, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, went aground about 50 meters off the scenic Jialeshuei coastal park in strong winds and heavy seas, which were whipped up by approaching tropical storm LINFA.
• Captain and Crew Member Drown:
An Indonesian freighter captain and one crew member drowned when a small boat capsized ferrying them to shore in Vietnam. Local police confirmed they found the bodies approximately 700 meters from the ship’s anchor site.
The Singaporean freighter BERKAH 33 anchored near the southern Vietnamese port of Can Tho. The Indonesian crew of five hailed a small boat to take them ashore, including the ship's captain.
Reportedly, the sailors were too heavy for the boat and it capsized and sank. The boat’s owners and three crew members were rescued by other boats in the area, but the captain and one sailor were swept away.
• Three Crew Members Missing After Tanker Explosion:
A laden tanker exploded and sunk off the southern Vietnamese coast, leaving three of its 15-man crew missing. The M/V NHAT THUAN was transporting 11,300 barrels of crude and about 2,600 gallons of diesel when the explosion occurred.
The ship was owned and operated by Binh Thuan Transport & Commercial Co. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, however the cause of the blast is still not known. The twelve rescued crew members are reported to be in good condition.
