Russia: Severe Weather Damages Southeastern Black Sea Ports

Dec 15, 2009 — A severe winter storm struck the southeastern coast of the Black Sea Monday afternoon. Particularly hard hit were the Russian city of Sochi and Abkhazia's capital of Sukhumi. Three people are reported missing and a port under construction was severely damaged. In Sukhumi the Turkish petroleum tanker, MAG-1, was pushed up onto the shore by massive waves. According to Abkhazia state news agency Apsnipress, the ship has not sprung a leak and the seven crewmembers were rescued.

Coast Guard Reminds Boaters of NYC Harbor Security Zones

Dec 14, 2009 — In a statement last week the U.S. Coast Guard said that its Sector New York and Station New York have had to "deploy several boarding teams in recent weeks to interdict boaters who were inside the 25-yard security zone around bridge abutments." In light of the increased number of violations in recent weeks, the Coast Guard would like to remind boaters in New York Harbor that if they violate the 25-yard security zone around a bridge abutment, the Coast Guard will first notify the offender via marine band radio and then may possibly board the boat to ensure compliance.

Lebanon: Crewmen Missing After Ship Sinks in Mediterranean

Dec 12, 2009 — An Israeli-owned, Tonga-flagged ship with a crew of either 12 or 13 Ukrainians capsized and sank in the Mediterranean between Cyprus and Lebanon early Friday morning. So far search and rescue crews have found one survivor from the Salla 2.

Georgia: Russia Sends Two Coast Guard Patrol Boats to Abkhazia

Dec 12, 2009 — As part of Russia's pledge to help defend the Georgian breakaway republic of Abkhazia, two Russian coast guard vessels arrived in the Black Sea port of Ochamchira on Friday. The Mangust class and Sobol class patrol boats are part of a division that is expected to include up to 10 vessels.

Coast Guard Rescues Cruise Ship Worker

Dec 11, 2009 — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a cruise ship crewmember who went overboard Friday morning roughly five miles off the Fowey Rocks near Biscayne Bay, Miami. The Majesty of the Seas had just put to sea when a distress call was made about 4:25 am. A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told USA Today that the crewmember jumped overboard.
