MarEx Mailbag: Reader Response to One Article From Last Weeks E-newsletter

Published Jan 12, 2011 10:48 AM by The Maritime Executive

MarEx reader weighs in on last week’s analysis from Captain John Konrad on Bridge Resource Management.

It was a very light MarEx Mailbag this week. Perhaps the excitement of a new President took the wind out of our sails. Or, perhaps my lead piece was boring. Nevertheless, in last week’s edition of the MarEx e-newsletter, we published a piece from gCaptain’s (Captain) John Konrad. The article, entitled, “Vessel Resource Management - Did Failure Extend Beyond The Bridge?” examined the COSCO BUSAN allision and makes some definitive statements and conclusions about what happened and perhaps more importantly, why. Read Konrad’s piece again by clicking HERE. You can read what one reader thought about the article:

Dear Joe,

John Konrad's piece, Vessel Resource Management - Did Failure Extend Beyond The Bridge? hits several nails firmly on the head. The domain of safety awareness does not begin and end at the ship's side, but embraces the decisions made by shore-based ship-management personnel and ship-owners. With seafarers around the world at ever increasing risk of trial on criminal charges it is, perhaps, time to put those ashore, whose decision affect safety, into the mix.

His insight and efforts into promoting maritime safety are well known, especially through his innovative Maritime Accident Casebook (MAC), a unique, free, informal educational resource, supported by donations, for seafarers and maritime trainers which seeks to empower seafarers through knowledge to keep themselves alive and their ships safe. MAC encourages seafarers to discuss lessons learned from real-life events and apply them to their own vessels and working practices to create a safety-conscious community. Thanks for weighing in, Bob.
