Danish Warship Releases Pirates

Published Jan 17, 2011 11:05 AM by The Maritime Executive

Danish warship ESBERN SNARRE intercepted pirates during an attack over the weekend. The pirates have since been released.

The warship was called to assist the Panamanian flagged MV CARIBBEAN CARRIER after it reported being under attack by pirates. The pirates also tried to attack Norwegian ship MV HOEGH OSLO, but fled when the ESBERN SNARRE fired warning shots.

A team from the Danish warship discovered knives and ammunition shells onboard the skiffs, however the pirates have been released. The exact reason as to why the pirates were released is unknown.

Many NATO forces who have joined together to combat piracy have had trouble prosecuting suspects because of the complex international maritime laws and conflicting country laws on the crime.

Esbern Snare is currently the flagship of NATO's Operation Ocean Shield, an anti-piracy mission off the Horn of Africa.
