Greek Shipowner Subject of Foiled Attack
Greek police have detained a man that they believe was planning an attack on Greek politicians and shipowners including Evangelos Marinakis, chairman of shipping company Capital Product Partners.
Police found hand-written notes detailing personal information about Marinakis and the telephone numbers of the Union of Greek Shipowners. Apparently, an attack was planned for October 4. The office of ruling New Democracy party, which celebrated its 40th anniversary on that date, was also among the list of likely targets.
The suspect has been linked to a left-wing militia group Revolutionary Struggle led by Greek urban guerilla Nikos Maziotis, who was arrested earlier this year after a shoot-out with police. Maziotis claimed responsibility for a bomb attack in April against the Bank of Greece.
