Cargo Ship Strikes Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge reopened to traffic over the weekend after a cargo ship clipped the span on Friday night.
Police said the Rainbow Quest was sailing south on the East River after leaving the Brooklyn Navy Yard, heading out to sea, when its light tower struck with the bottom of the bridge at around 11 p.m. on Friday. The vessel reportedly did not suffer any severe damage.
A Coast Guard spokeswoman said the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) had already scheduled a routine closure on the bridge late Friday and inspected the span when it was closed.
Traffic on the bridge was stopped for at least two hours as the Coast Guard and the NYPD Harbor Patrol also surveyed the damage. The Department of Transportation found no damage to the bridge and no one was injured.
Local reports stated that the river's tide was high, but not at its highest point of the night, when the allision occurred.
Needless to say, walkers on the iconic tourist attraction were a bit shook up!
