Seeking Input for MDA Town Hall Meeting

Published Jan 12, 2011 2:13 PM by The Maritime Executive

The Global Maritime Information Sharing Symposium (GMISS) is an annual event hosted by the National Maritime Domain Awareness Coordination Office (NMCO) to align U.S. Government outreach to the maritime industry and improve and increase industry-government maritime information sharing partnerships.

The MDA Town Hall Meeting, taking place on September 14, the 1st day of the 3-day symposium, will set the tone for GMISS 2010 by providing industry with the opportunity to directly address key US government officials on maritime security and information sharing policies for the protection and free flow of commerce.

PLEASE submit any questions, opinions, suggestions on maritime safety & security regulations that impact your business.

The INDUSTRY PANEL currently has representatives from various maritime sectors: Labor (U.S.), International ship owners/operators, Inland waterway vessel owners/operators, Terminal Operators.

The U.S. GOVERNMENT PANEL will be represented by the MDA Executive Steering Committee from the Department of Transportation, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and the National Maritime Intelligence Center who will address pertinent issues such as the new US MDA structure and how does the group see U.S. MDA fitting into the global maritime information system?

The PANEL MODERATOR will be the Editor-In-Chief of the Maritime Executive Magazine, Tony Munoz.

Input and feedback from the industry is vital and necessary to ensure government information sharing regulations don’t interfere with commerce. Issues from industry may include:

  • Currently, certain elements of MDA extract information from industry by force; might there be incentives to providing information?
  • Industry is principally a supplier; they would like to be a customer as well. What would the USG be willing to provide?
  • How might information exchange be leveraged in a manner that enhances business?
  • What’s on the horizon for us that we should start planning for in terms of budgets or changes to our business processes?
  • Why do you need our information in the first place? Has it really made a difference?

Please submit questions or issues you would like to see addressed at the MDA Town Hall Meeting to: [email protected].
